About the character
``Name;; Alexander Cane
``Nicknames;; Alex
``Age;; 17
``Gender;; Male
``Birthday;; April 18
``Grade;; Senior
``Heritage;; Scandinavian, mixed European
``Orientation;; Straight, as far as he knows.
Appearance
``Eyes;; Brown, big and doe-like
``Hair;; Dark blonde, short and wavy
``Height;; 5'11"
``Weight;; 150 lbs
``Body Type;; Lean
``Skin Color;; Average Caucasian
``Tattoos/piercings/scars;; He has a tattoo of the word "light" written in Tolkien Elvish on his left wrist, as well as a single cartilage piercing in his right ear, usually filled by a simple silver hoop.
``Dress style;; Comfortable, casual, perhaps even borderline hipster. He has a wide collection of graphic tees that he's quite proud of, as well as a pair of dark plastic-framed glasses. Aside from that, his clothing is simple. A couple pairs of jeans, a themed hoodie here and there, sneakers and moccasins and of course a dusty old pair of Converse.
``Overall;; Lanky and awkward, Alex's reserved nature and tendency to slouch make him look shorter than his respectable height of very-nearly-six-feet. His features are on the softer side; his big brown eyes have a tendency to make him look confused, especially when he's listening intently. He is neither extremely attractive nor ugly, but simply average; his glasses, nerdy tees, and tattoo are what he likes to think makes his appearance subtly unique. Like his brother's, his voice is deeper than you'd expect from someone so skinny, but unlike Marius it isn't hard to make Alex smile or laugh.
Personality
``Likes;;
- Vidya games, fantasy, and all things geeky
- Working with his hands
- Color
- Modern and new
- Curvy girls
- Drawing (if only he could actually do so)
- Learning, thinking, pondering, considering
- Cosplay
``Dislikes;;
- Darkness
- Inevitable failed social interactions
- Cold
- Seeing how he compares to his brother
- Expectations
``Hobbies;;
- Running - the only sport or form of exercise at which he doesn't think he fails
- Tinkering - with computers, with LEGOs, with scale models, etc.
- Making cosplays
- Reading (but who doesn't like a good book?)
``Quirks;;
- Keeps his room at a borderline uncomfortably warm temperature
- Blushes excessively easily
- Has a strange fear of being seen unclothed
- Often speaks in the middle of a train of thought, leaving others confused as to the context
``Flaws;;
- People pleasing comes naturally, perhaps too naturally. He is timid and will bend his will more often than not.
- While he likes to see the good in people, he is quick to judge and assume things about others.
- Very difficult to motivate - his life motto is "what will be, will be;" letting life go on it's way is a lot easier than trying to make a change.
``Secrets;;
- Seeks his brother's approval while simultaneously taking comfort in the fact that he always got along better with their parents
- Enjoys making costumes for cosplays and is quite good at sewing
- Has absolutely no idea what he's doing with his life
``Personality;; Growing up in the shadow of his icy-perfect brother left Alex rather identity-confused. Too shy to embrace the parts that make him different, and too stubborn to admit the parts that are the same, he sees himself in a constant comparison to his elder sibling and has a frustrating lack of stability in the way he sees himself.
Underneath the confusion, Alex shares his brother's analytical mind, wit, and unfaltering loyalty to whatever or whoever has earned it. That, however, seems to be where the similarities stop. Alex received all of the sensitivity that his brother never had - he actually cares what other people think, to the extent of being a people-pleaser at times. He never had the poise, sharpness, or intelligence that Marius had, so instead of trying and failing to be his older brother, he withdrew and avoided expectation altogether. Though he tends to be awkward in social situations, laughing at the wrong moment or stumbling over his words, his underlying sweetness is not hard to find. He sees himself as a supporter, always preferring to serve or help from behind the scenes. Still, there are aspects of his personality and life that he hesitates to embrace - his geekiness, his sarcastic sense of humor. He has his ways of quietly rebelling against Marius and the pressure he always felt to be like him, but they are just that - quiet. He would never admit it aloud, but if he were to really live out his personality... what would Marius think?
History

``Dad;; Niles Cane, 56, chemical engineer, close
``Sibling(s);; Marius Cane, 22, artist/graphic designer, distant
``Pet(s);; A couple cats at home; he always wanted a pet snake, but his mother would hear nothing of it.
``Other;; Alex spent a good chunk of time with his brother's friends Catrin and Tyler when they were still in school with him, but their age difference was big - for a highschooler, at least. He still sees them from time to time, but he's sure they only visit out of pity or some need to make up for Marius' lack of attention.
``History;; Alex's home life was quiet, uneventful, and wholesome until, well... always. With a stable middle-class income, loving parents, and a huge Colorado backyard to play in, the only thing the young gifted could complain about was his older brother. Though Marius never meant any true harm, he was always quick to judge and all too happy to criticize. If Alex was doing something wrong, he could be sure to hear his faults soon enough. When he was especially young, perhaps four or five, he had a terrible fear of the dark. Of course, that fear was silly and illogical according to Marius, who took it upon himself to make sure Alex never had a working night-lite in his room. Though traumatizing, in retrospect he has to thank his brother for that. Trembling one night in the dark of his room, Alex stared at the sliver of light from under the door until, strangely, it began to move. His desperation seemed to be pulling the light towards him, bizarrely enough. When he was young the power was linked strongly to his emotions, but as he grew older he gained more control.
For the longest time, Alex aspired to be just like his brother, even though the things that Marius made look easy always felt nearly impossible when he tried. In fact, it seemed like Alex didn't excel at much at all, aside from bending light to his will, and that wasn't exactly something he was allowed to flaunt in public. His grades in school were average, sports never came naturally, and no matter how hard he tried, he simply could not draw. That was his secret yearning, after - to be able to capture the beauty he saw around him with pencil and brush. growing up in Colorado left him with no lack of nature's wonders to inspire him, but inspiration was little without a means of putting it to use. Cruelly, it seemed fate had given that ability to someone who would rather stay shut up inside in his black-and-white world than open his eyes to the color of the world.
To this day Alex still struggles with sizing up to his elder sibling, but his parents were never blind to his complex. Sympathetic, they encouraged him to pursue talents that he did have. While jealous of his brother's artistic skill, he never paid much attention to his own abilities. His skills were more on the practical side than artistic; he was always good with his hands. His father taught him how to build a computer and work with power tools, and his mother taught him how to sew, as soon as she convinced him that boys were, in fact, allowed to make clothing.
For his freshman year of highschool, his parents insisted on Stonebrook Academy. Though that meant being close to Marius again, they knew his powers, though at the time neglected and underdeveloped, had promise. Alex never saw his powers as much more than a novelty, but they hoped being around other gifteds would encourage their son to embrace his own unique qualities instead of trying to be someone he was not.
``Powers/Abilities/Gifts;; Alex can bend light to his will, or, more specifically, photons. He can change the wavelength and intensity of the light to anything he wishes, but he must have a source, even if it's small. In principle, this power means he could make anyone see whatever he wants them to see, but he hasn't progressed much farther than moving the light like liquid and the occasional laser beam.
``Role Play Sample;; I'm going to give you textwalls later, so don't make me fill this out too.
