About the character
``Name;; Cora Roe
``Nicknames;; None
``Age;; Fifteen
``Gender;; Female
``Birthday;; May 8th
``Grade;; 10th, Sophomore.
``Heritage;; American; a blend of lots of things, but none of them in enough of a majority to matter.
``Orientation;; Heterosexual
Appearance
``Eyes;; Light blue
`` Hair;; Black
``Height;; 5'3"
``Weight;; 144 pounds
``Body Type;; Unathletic, plump
``Skin Color;; White; doesn't tan well.
``Tattoos/piercings/scars;; She has both ears pierced once.
``Dress style;; The only things Cora will not wear, unless forced, are dresses and skirts and tight-fitting clothes. Other than that, colour and style don't matter much. She does tend more to warm-weather clothing no matter the season, though. Also, she always has pockets; the deeper, the better.
``Overall;; Cora rarely looks very well-groomed. Her curly black hair falls to mid-back and won't lie right unless she uses hair-spray, which she hates and refuses to do; her clothes are often faded with wear, worn for comfort and not looks; any long-sleeved shirts will inevitably have pencil marks on their cuffs. But she doesn't give the impression of being unhappy or lax, and carries herself confidently.
Personality
``Likes;;
- Socialising
- Being outside (especially in warm weather)
- Picnics
- Art (especially drawing)
- Music with lyrics; the faster or more complex, the better
- Music that starts slow and gradually speeds up
- People-watching
- The musty smell you get in old shops
``Dislikes;;
- People badmouthing others behind their back
- English classes and homework
- Headphones of all kinds
- Working with clay
- Seafood
``Hobbies;;
- Composing music with computer programmes (but never showing it to anyone)
- Extracorricular chemistry
- Teaching herself (very spotty) sign language
``Quirks;;
- May be disorganised, but always makes sure that none of her things fall beyond the limits of "her space", whatever that might be
- Is very good at tongue-twisters
- Is very animated when talking, gesturing to make points and demonstrate stories
``Flaws;;
- Doesn't stand up for herself or her friends
- Disorganised; with the exception of art supplies, never remembers where she put things
- Is very bad at English and hates writing and, to a lesser extent, reading
``Secrets;;
- Is terrified of discovering what people really think of her
- Used to make fun of other Gifteds to keep the mainstream friends she had
``Personality;; Sociable and easygoing, Cora likes nothing more than spending time with her friends, and even has a good relationship with most of her teachers. She is willing to talk to everyone, and considers anyone who is cordial to her a "friend"; however, this means that while she has a large circle of casual acquaintances, she has very few close friends. She refuses to think too deeply about what lies beneath the surfaces of others, because she doesn't want to start worrying about what they might actually be thinking of her, and because she doesn't want to start psychoanalysing herself, either. She's always willing to help people with their homework in subject she's good at, especially if they agree to let her use them as a model for her pictures later.
As well-adjusted as she may look in Stone Brook, with all its Gifted pupils, she is always more nervous outside it. She finds it very difficult to defend herself and her powers against others, and is easily swayed by peer pressure into doing things she would ordinarily rail against.
History
``Mom;; Carole Lee Roe, forty-eight, manager of a bakery, close relationship.
``Dad;; Sam Roe, forty-five, private piano teacher, close relationship.
``Sibling(s);; None
``Pet(s);; Four dogs at home
``Other;; None
``History;; As well as her powers, Cora was gifted with quite open-minded parents. The fact that her gifts were easy to hide once she understood them meant that she could grow up relatively normally. Cora's father spent most of his days at home, except for those days when he went out to give lessons, and so she grew up closer to her father than to her mother. He didn't think she should hide her powers, and to the best of his ability tried to convince her to be strong in the face of others' ridicule rather than skulk in the shadows.
This she did, but she never really managed it, and by the time she was in middle school she had stopped trying altogether. In her best attempts to fit in with her peers, Cora not only hid her powers but shunned the very few Gifteds at her school, and treated the state of being Gifted with derision. This she kept from her father, and she feels even worse about it now that she's at Stone Brook.
Her mother had the idea of sending her to the Gifted school the year before she was due to enter high school, and brought it up to her first. Initially she rejected the idea, sure she could continue in mainstream school and not wanting to leave; but her mother convinced her to try it, just for a year, and so she started as a freshman.
The fact that she neither needed to hide nor ridicule her powers was surprisingly freeing, and the initial awkwardness of meeting the student body faded as she found that none of them, at least up to that point, could figure out why she had been leary to come. At the end of that year she decided to stay on at Stone Brook rather than return, although she enjoys her trips home each summer.
``Powers/Abilities/Gifts;; Cora is telekinetic. The most she can do with it, though, is levitating/flying, and that not for long periods. It takes mental effort, and that, combined with the wind speed when she flies, gives her a headache pretty fast. She can just float in one place for longer, though. The telekinesis doesn't extend well to other objects, either; she has to be very careful not to misjudge the amount of mental force she applies when manipulating other objects, and she will often break them by mistake. She's learned not even to bother with that, although practice may be able to improve her control somewhat.
``Role Play Sample;; (A realtime RP, so it's in present tense rather than past)
Even very generous people wouldn't call Ealda quick at waking up. She's been sleeping curled up on her side, which is better than nothing but not nearly as good as being able to hang upside down from something. First the eyes open, blink blearily, and get vigorously rubbed by a tiny hand. Then she yawns, stretching her little body out as far as it can go without actually leaving the darkness beneath the bed. Then she hears the small sounds Mekki makes from above as she registers Ealda's scufflings. This startles her, having not remembered anybody coming in between the time she fell asleep and, well, now. Whenever that is. She pokes her head out from under the bed, ears swiveling, and spots Mekki sitting on one of the bunks. This prompts her to come all the way out and bounce up to land on that same bed, still yawning. "You're crew?" she asks straight off. Then, as an afterthought, "good morning!" Regardless of what time of day it might actually be.
